Educator Spotlight: Danielle Neer

Danielle Neer, literacy intervention teacher (Gr. 2-6), Central Okanagan School District (SD23), Kelowna

Danielle supports colleagues and students in her role as a district-based reading intervention program teacher. Working closely with school-based teams to identify students for this level of support, Danielle delivers intensive, responsive, and research-based intervention for learners in Grades 2-6. She also facilitates workshops, coaches alongside, and invites conversations with colleagues on the complexities of literacy learning and teaching.

While most districts in BC have early intervention literacy teams (SD23 has this as a focus, too), providing systematic intensive reading intervention beyond Grade 2 has been an essential way for our district to support complex learners. There are few examples of district-based intervention at this level across BC, but many school-based strategies that are meeting the needs of struggling readers and writers.
