Educator Spotlight: Meet Kathy

Kathy Rice has been an educator for 28 years, with experience ranging from teaching in a rural two-room school to working in high-needs urban schools. Although she spent many years teaching primary grades, particularly Grade One, her work has increasingly focused on literacy intervention and supporting students who experience difficulty learning to read.

Kathy currently works as a Primary Intervention Teacher with School District 57 in Prince George, providing learning support and literacy intervention across the elementary grades. She is passionate about helping students develop the foundational skills they need to become successful, confident, and joyful readers, while supporting teachers in using effective, evidence-informed literacy practices.

Kathy is a member of the Learning Assistance Teachers’ Association (LATA) Executive and is committed to advocating for strong literacy instruction and meaningful support for students who struggle with reading. She believes that, with appropriate instruction, support, and time, we can teach almost every child to read. Her guiding principle is simple: literacy for all.

Outside of education, Kathy is a Swim Canada Master Official and is actively involved in competitive swimming officiating. She values the same principles in officiating that guide her work in literacy: continuous learning, reflection, consistency, and a commitment to helping others improve. When she isn’t on the pool deck, she enjoys cycle touring and exploring new places by bicycle.
