Educator Spotlight: Meet Alexis

Alexis Rekdal has been an educator for 15 years, with experience as a classroom teacher from K–7 and as a District Literacy Teacher. After years in the classroom, she became increasingly interested in understanding why some students struggled to learn to read and what she could do differently to support her most high-need students.
With the mentorship of colleagues, this curiosity led her to pursue further study in reading science and to focus her work on translating research into practical, classroom-based approaches. Alexis serves as a District Literacy Teacher in SD71, on the territory of the Pentlach, E’iksan, Sahtloot, and Sasitla people, known collectively today as K’ómoks First Nation. She collaborates with teachers and school teams through co-planning, modelling, co-teaching, assessment, and responsive literacy support. She also works with the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care on provincial K–4 foundational literacy initiatives. Her interests include structured literacy, early identification and intervention, assessment, and multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). Alexis believes, and has seen firsthand, that meaningful change in literacy education happens when research is translated into practical, sustainable classroom practice. She is committed to ongoing learning and to creating collaborative spaces where educators can explore evidence, ask questions, and learn from one another. Outside of education, Alexis enjoys hiking, mountain biking, surfing, kayaking, and exploring Vancouver Island and beyond!
